The Painter, the Clown and the Musician
Two versions of this remarkable work reveal the artistic evolution of the late Simon Edery.
The first version above was painted between 1975–1980, during his studies at the prestigious Beaux-Arts de Paris. In it, the clowns are depicted in soft, misty hues that reflect the gentle French light.
Twenty years later, between 1985–2005, the artist returned to the same composition in Israel—this time, with fiery, glowing colors. As Simon once said: “In Israel, the light is blinding.” And indeed, the clowns now shine in intense reds, capturing the sharp, radiant Israeli sunlight.

Through his clowns—recurring figures in his work—Simon expressed the human condition with humor, weaving together the comedy and tragedy of life itself.
